5 weekend markets not to be missed in Murcia
The street markets dotted throughout the Murcia Region are steeped in history and tradition
If you haven’t yet made plans for the weekend, the Murcia Region’s abundance of street markets will offer an unmissable opportunity to sample the area’s rich culture.
Whether you’re into artisan products, antiques, handmade crafts or unique, local delicacies, Murcia has it all on offer, and we’ve rounded up some of the best markets for the discerning shopper to try.
1. The ‘trail’ of Murcia
Located in the centre of Murcia city, this morning market offers a plethora of second-hand items for lovers of antiques, collectors or the simply curious. This mini flea market is made up of about 50 stalls and is conveniently situated in the Plano de San Francisco on the banks of the Segura River, before the Paseo de Malecon.
The tables are filled with various objects such as collectible coins, paintings, vinyls and films, many of which have a rich history behind them, making this market a place full of nostalgic charm.
When: every Sunday morning between 9am and 2pm.
2. Cabo de Palos Market
Cabo de Palos is one of the best-loved and most visited destinations in the Region, offering countless tourist attractions such as its many small coves and cliffs and its emblematic 16th-century lighthouse, but savvy shoppers should be sure to check out its traditional Sunday market.
Here there is something for everyone: its 200 stalls hold everything from second-hand clothes, shoes, fruit and spices to speciality Murcian products such as salted meats and pickles.
When: every Sunday between 8am and 2pm.
3. Zoco del Guadalabiad Craft Market
If you’re the creative type, then the Zoco del Guadalabiad craft market in Molina de Segura is not to be missed. Situated in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, more than 20 stalls serve as a showcase for the Region’s hand-made artisan products and browsers can find everything from cured meats and cheeses to wooden furniture and jewellery.
When: the first Saturday of each month between 5pm and 9pm.
4. El Zacatin Craft Market
In case you don’t get your fill of crafts on Saturday, the El Zacatin market in Bullas, picturesquely located in the surrounds of the Old Squares and the Castle, may just have what you’re looking for. Boasting its first market day back in January 1994, El Zacatin’s stalls sell only hand-made products while the venue also offers a wide variety of traditional activities, product tastings and guided tours of the old cellars.
When: the first Sunday of every month between 9am and 2pm.
5. Los Frailes Craft Market
Originally designed to preserve the local and unique traditions of Cieza, the Los Frailes craft market features more than 30 stalls selling typical regional produce, such as homemade sausages, all prepared by master artisans.
When: the first Sunday of the month between 10am and 2pm.
