ARCHIVED - 5K Solidarity Walk and Race Against Breast Cancer in Orihuela: October 24
2,500 people are expected to take part in helping to raise funds and awareness in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, at the weekend
Despite advances in research and the daily efforts of professionals, metastatic breast cancer continues to be a leading cause of death in women between 35 and 50 years of age, and it's estimated that last year more than 6,000 women died in Spain as a result of the disease.
To help raise awareness and funds, the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Orihuela is staging its fifth 5K Solidarity Walk and Race on Sunday October 24, and men, women and children are urged to take part and "fill the streets with solidarity and affection".
Speaking on World Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Tuesday October 19, President of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AEEC) in Orihuela, Irene Celdrán, thanked everyone involved in staging Sunday's charity walk and run, and explained: "Every day we fight against the disease. Many people have not overcome it, but that does not make them any less brave. But today is a day of hope, we must continue to fight for more research and the necessary prevention."
Anybody interested in taking part in the charity event can register for 10 euros at www.tragamillas.org until 12 noon on Friday October 22. If, after this deadline, there are any bibs and pink t-shirts left, registrations will be accepted at the La Lonja building in Calle Aragón on Saturday from 10am to 1.30pm and 4.30pm to 8pm, and on Sunday at 8am,
Runners will be given a black bib and walkers will wear fuchsia when they set off from the Glorieta Gabriel Miró at 10am.
"It is recommended that on the day of the race we all wear the pink t-shirt to see that tide running through the streets," said organisers, who are expecting around 2,500 to take part.
