A reminder that V-16 emergency lights replace triangles in Spain from January 1

Starting the new year, drivers will need a V-16 beacon instead of a warning triangle to meet Spain's road safety rules

From January 1 2026, the V‑16 emergency light officially replaces the traditional warning triangles in Spain. This is the last step in a transition that started a couple of years ago, and after this date, triangles will no longer be valid roadside safety devices.

The V‑16 beacon is a small, yellow flashing light that sits on top of your vehicle when you stop in an emergency. It’s designed to make you more visible to other drivers, especially on motorways or poorly lit roads. And yes, you can even test it at home without triggering the emergency services, so you can get used to how it works before you hit the road.

Most vehicles will need to carry one, including cars, vans, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles. Some are exempt, like certain classic cars or slow-moving machinery, but for the majority of drivers, it will be mandatory from the start of the new year. Authorities are expected to step up roadside checks in January, so it’s definitely worth making sure you’re ready!

This change is all part of Spain’s push to modernise roadside safety. If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to get your V‑16 device now and familiarise yourself with how it works before the big day.
