Alicante Airport celebrates the busiest April of all time
An incredible 1.5 million people passed through the doors of the Costa Blanca airport last month
It seems the only way is up for the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández following yet another record-breaking month. In April, a staggering 1,590,828 passengers travelled through the aerodrome, the largest number of all time and 10.8% more than the same month last year.
These figures mean that the Costa Blanca airport has broken its own records every month this year so far. Not only that, but Alicante has now surpassed one million passengers in 13 out of the last 14 months.
And things are only going to get busier with the summer season fast approaching. The current forecasts expect 37,963 flights to operate at Alicante between April 1 and October 31, meaning there will be almost 7 million seats on offer. If this comes to fruition, it would represent an increase of 13.3% compared to the 2023 figures.
Even with these impressive predictions, the Minister of Transport is adamant that Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández does not need a second runway, and he claims that all of the airlines back him up. Rather, some 6 million euros will be spent on vastly expanding the current terminal to handle the millions of passengers that pass through the airport’s doors each year.
April’s figures mean that Alicante was the fifth busiest airport in Spain last month, behind Málaga (2,162,308 travellers).
In terms of international traffic, the UK is holding firmly to the top spot in Alicante. Throughout April, 552,320 British passengers used the airport, followed by the Netherlands, with 102,913; Belgium, with 81,690; Germany, with 81,538; and Norway, with 71,056.
During the first four months of 2024, Alicante Airport has welcomed a total of 4,819,105 passengers, which translates into a growth of 18.5% compared to the same period last year.
If the demand remains this high, Alicante could be looking at beating 2023’s record of 15.9 million passengers.
