ARCHIVED - Alicante Castillo de Santa Barbara castle smashes its 2022 goal for visitor numbers in just 7 months
The tourist destination in Alicante has already received 464,478 visitors since January, surpassing the 400,000 expected for the whole year
The Castillo de Santa Bárbara castle in Alicante has exceeded its one-year visitor target in the last seven months alone, with 464,478 visits between the end of January and August
Initially, the visitor team at the castle expected and aimed to get more than 400,000 people coming to the famous monument over the course of 2022, an objective they have well and truly smashed already.
In July, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara welcomed a record number of visitors, with nearly 100,000 people from 87 countries coming through its doors, while in August there were 85,722.
Interestingly, in July the most numerous foreign visitors came from the United Kingdom (13% of the total number of visits), while in August they were surpassed by the French (15%).
The Deputy Mayor of Alicante and head of the Alicante Tourist Board, Mari Carmen Sánchez, said this week that she was “very satisfied” with the results and stressed that in addition to increasing the already high number of visitors, one of the objectives was to bring the castle back to life.
“We have achieved this with a full programme of cultural and leisure activities designed for the whole family, enjoyed by both locals and tourists who visit us,” she enthused.
Last month, Santa Barbara Castle won the prestigious 2022 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award and was picked as one of the top tourist destinations to visit in Spain along with the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Prado Museum in Madrid.
Guided tours of the castle began again on January 24 after it was reopened. Since then, more than 900 people have taken a guided tour of the castle, half of them in English.
In addition, up to August, there have been 45 musical, theatrical, circus and comedy activities held at the castle – all free of charge – and a dozen concerts. There have also been three very successful themed weekends: one medieval, one dedicated to chocolate and one about pirates.
