ARCHIVED - Andalusia nightlife sector demands more lenient measures amidst Covid certificate rule
The new rule comes into effect on August 5 in Andalucía, but many business owners are not happy with the decision
The decision made by the regional government to require a Covid certificate to enter night clubs and other venues came as a shock to many businesses within the sector, who are now asking for other restrictions to be lifted.
The sector wants to be able to open until 7am and to have no occupancy or social distancing rules inside their establishments, as the Covid certificates would, in theory, create a Covid-free space inside nightclubs, with only people who have been double-jabbed or who have tested negative allowed inside.
The president of ‘Andalucía de Noche’, Juan Rambla, who represents the nightlife sector, has expressed his disappointment that the industry was not consulted before the government made this decision, he feels that representatives from the sector should have had a meeting with the authorities to reach an agreement and solve the logistical problems that will inevitably arise.
Another problem presented by this new measure is that the majority of nightlife customers are aged between 18 and 21, which is an age group who have only just been able to receive their first vaccine.
“How can we ask them for a Covid certificate, when, even if they wanted to, they couldn’t have had both doses?” asks Rambla.
According to the most recent data, around 58 per cent of people aged between 20 and 29-years-old have received one dose of Pfizer or Moderna, which require three or four weeks between the first and second jabs.
Rambla has contacted the Junta to ask for a bigger margin and to request that other restrictions be lifted for the sector. If the regional government refuses to listen to the sector, its representatives have stated their intention to go to court to stop the new measure from coming into effect.
“If the Junta demands certificate controls at the entrance, they have to lift all other measures in our establishments. If not, they are admitting that the vaccines are useless”, said one angry club owner.
