ARCHIVED - Corvera airport in Murcia receives 13 times more passengers in 2022 than last year
With these bumper figures, the Murcia airport is expecting a busy Easter, but it’s still nowhere near pre-pandemic levels
Poor old Corvera Airport. It’s about time the Murcia airport had some good news. After coronavirus brought flights to a grinding halt, the slow return of business travel and the regular tourism is finally beginning to show.
The number of passengers who passed through the airport in the first two months of 2022 is already 13 times higher than in the same period in 2021.

A total of 33,977 passengers used the airport between January and February of this year. This a year-on-year growth of 1281.2%, but it’s actually still a long way from the figures for 2019. In fact, the current number of passengers is barely more than half of what was recorded then.
Already in January, a positive trend was beginning to be seen, as with 13,600 passengers, Corvera airport had recovered almost 70% of the activity compared to the year before the pandemic. However, it also represented a loss of passengers compared to December 2021, when a total of 19,326 passengers were recorded.
February, meanwhile, recorded a higher year-on-year increase (2440.8%) and reached 20,377 passengers, but was actually a 54.9% decrease compared to 2019.
The 27th busiest airport in the country
With these results, the International Airport of the Region of Murcia ranks as the 27th busiest airport in Spain. This means it has dropped two places compared to its results at the end of 2021. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas continues to lead as the airport that has handled the most passengers during this period, followed by Barcelona-El Prat.
However, despite this relegated position, the truth is that Corvera airport is the airport with the second highest increase in the number of passengers in year-on-year terms, only surpassed by Girona-Costa Brava (1932.4%). And although the growth rates are huge, the vast majority of airports in Spain are below 500%, with only two terminals managing to surpass the 1,000% barrier.
What’s more, Corvera airport managed to scoop a European award for the best quality of service this year, showing that it’s not just the number of passengers that makes a good airport, but also the quality of the travel experience.
