ARCHIVED - Benidorm holiday accommodation is 11 per cent more expensive than pre-pandemic
One online booking agency has seen a 70% hike in Benidorm bookings by Brits compared to 2019
With day-to-day costs spiralling across Spain, from petrol to gas and electricity prices, it's hardly surprising holidaymakers are going to have to dig a little deeper to enjoy a week or two in the sun.
Having endured two years of a pandemic that brought the tourism industry to its knees, the sector in Benidorm is steadily getting back on its feet and recording promising figures, particularly over the Easter period.
But new data from an online travel agency that works with Visit Benidorm Tourist Board, Destinia, shows that holiday accommodation at the Costa Blanca's biggest tourist resort is on average 11% more expensive than pre-pandemic.
Apparently, 7% of holidaymakers book their breaks through Destinia, which was one of a number of agencies and other firms and organisations that were represented in a working meeting with Visit Benidorm and the Town Hall this week.
The rise in accommodation costs was apparently over passed by "positive data on the holiday destination after two difficult years due to the restrictions caused by the health crisis", according to the online agency's general manager, Ricardo Fernández.
In particular, "the desire that people have to return to Benidorm", and the fact the agency has seen a 70% rise in the British market - the resort's largest - compared to the first five months in 2019.
The figures aren't so impressive for the domestic market, with a 1% drop compared to 2019. It must be remembered, these figures only relate to bookings through Destinia, and the fall could be explained by the differentiation between the two markets.
"The Spanish tend to book their trips at the last minute, while the British do it much more in advance," said the agency manager, who has predicted "a good summer tourist season for Benidorm, which will overcome the current challenges such as geopolitics, inflation and the pandemic".
