ARCHIVED - Benidorm hosts official Poppy Appeal Launch 2021
The Royal British Legion (RBL) staged the Poppy Appeal North District Spain launch and parade in the Marina Baixa resort on Saturday October 16
The official launch of the Poppy Appeal 2021 in the North District Spain was held in the popular coastal resort of Benidorm at the weekend, with a Parade of Standards along the Paseo de Levante, led once again by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.
Also taking part in the march were the Chelsea Pensioners, pensioner soldiers from the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, who made their way to Avinguda Ametlla de Mar in the Rincon de Loix area, where the the Royal British Legion Concert Band entertained crowds before the official ceremony.
Attendees included Benidorm Mayor, Toni Perez; RBL National Vice-President, Joe Falzon; the Defence Attaché of the British Embassy, Captain Ian Clarke; the British Consul, Sara-Jane Morris; RBL Chairman District, Donald Cubbon; RBL Overseas Representative, Bob Chambers and the RBL Overseas Support Officer member, Fi Hedges.
"The red poppy emblem that presides over the ceremony each year is a symbol of both remembrance and hope for a peaceful future," said Perez during the launch, whilst thanking the Royal British Legion for its continued efforts in "supporting those who served their country and their families and dependents."
The mayor also also referred to the pandemic and praised the "support provided to compatriots" living in Benidorm, through telephone contact, visits and support in partnership with the social services, "always fulfilling the mission of the British Royal Legion".
He ended his speech by giving encouragement to the RBL district branches "to go on doing so for another 100 years".
The RBL, founded in 1921, is a non-profit organisation which, through the Poppy Appeal, distributes 25 million poppies each year to raise cash to support ex-military personnel and their families.
It has more than 700,000 members worldwide, of which there are around 4,000 in Spain and more than 1,000 in Alicante province.
And in the last six months, RBL in Spain has provided support in more than 200 cases.
