ARCHIVED - Benidorm parking overhaul is the tourist tax in disguise, say opposition
New green paid parking areas have been introduced in the Marina Baixa town
Opposition parties in the Alicante holiday hotspot of Benidorm have criticised the new designated paid parking spots for visitors, claiming it is just an underhanded way of applying the controversial tourist tax while penalising residents at the same time.
“To all those who come to the city with their vehicle, the City Council is going to tax their visit with a new parking fee. A hidden rate that is not covered in the current concessionaire contract or in any fiscal ordinance”, the socialist municipal group has criticised.
According to spokesperson Rubén Martínez, a promise had previously been made by the Benidorm regional government that areas with a continuous white line would remain as exclusive parking for regular residents. Now, with the introduction of the new green paid parking zones, he argued, residents will have fewer options of places to park their cars.

To remedy the problem, Mr Martínez has demanded that the local government rectify its “disastrous” mobility policy in Benidorm which “is causing serious damage to residents and also to those who visit us.”
“The PP's policy of massive elimination of parking spaces and their replacement by dissuasive parking lots is generating serious problems for our residents, visitors and merchants”, he concluded.
