ARCHIVED - Bomb threat hoax at San Javier school after teacher accused of disrespecting Islam
A student hoax is suspected but all threats of this kind must be taken seriously
Classes were suspended for a couple of hours on Thursday morning at the Ruiz de Alda secondary school in San Javier after an email was sent in both Spanish and Arabic to warn that a bomb had been placed on the premises.
The headmaster of the school immediately halted classes and called the Guardia Civil, and the NRBQ explosives detection and deactivation specialists who combed the school buildings found no evidence of any explosive devices. Classes therefore resumed at 10.00 and the rest of the morning is reported to have passed without any alteration to the usual routine.
The email received by the school, and also by various students, claimed that one of the teachers had disrespected Islam, calling to mind a horrific incident in October last year when a history teacher in France was decapitated after he showed caricatures of Muhammad to his pupils.
In general, the perpetrators of actions such as this do not issue warnings, but of course it is necessary to treat bomb threats seriously. In this case, though, the disruption appears to have been due to a hoax, and already the list of exams scheduled for Thursday morning is being scrutinized in an effort to trace any student who might have been responsible: such tactics were frequently used by pupils who wanted to avoid bad exam results during the 1990s, when the Basque separatist terrorist group ETA was still active.
Should the hoaxer or hoaxers be identified, they will be charged with an offence listed in the Penal Code and punishable with both a fine and a suspended prison sentence.
