British tabloid hails Murcia as top winter destination
National newspaper highlights winter climate, cuisine, heritage and natural spaces, and cheap new off-season flights
Murcia has been given a glowing recommendation by the Daily Mirror, which hails the region as a perfect off-season destination for UK tourists.
The tabloid praises the local climate, cuisine, heritage and natural spaces, and points out that new flights make it more easily and affordably accessible than ever.
EasyJet’s winter programme from October to March used to only serve Murcia International Airport from Gatwick, but now flies here from Bristol and London too.
Ryanair also has a new route from Stansted.
Tickets can cost as little as €20 one way and there are weekend return trips from as little as €44.
This will also benefit residents of Murcia who want to pop over to the UK from their local airport.
Of course the biggest lure for Brits in Blighty is that Murcia’s average temperature in November is a balmy 21ºC.
The typically pleasant and mostly dry winter weather means the region’s “breathtaking natural parks and stunning sandy beaches” can be enjoyed all year round.
Meanwhile the city of Murcia is less crowded than more well-known tourist hotspots but still lively and rich with culture and history.
The newspaper highlights Murcia’s Roman sites, its grand cathedral, the 18th century Bishops Palace, the modern annexe of City Hall, and the Royal Casino.
Hikers can explore the landscape and wildlife of the Barrancos de Gebas in the Sierra Espuña Regional Park, and Cabo de Palos is “a hotspot for scuba diving”.
And of course Murcia is famous for its food, being known as the Garden of Europe or Europe's Orchard due to the wealth of fruit, vegetables, oils, nuts and flowers grown in the region’s fertile valleys, as well as fresh seafood.
These quality ingredients enable local chefs to create delicious meals and tapas, with the article particularly recommending Marineras, Murcia al Vino and Paparajotes.
Previously, The Telegraph has also recommended Calblanque beach and Murcia city, and the region’s food, towns and beaches are often praised by National Geographic magazine.
