ARCHIVED - Cartagena Rosell Hospital reopens Covid ward due to rise in infections
The Cartagena facility is a central part of the Region’s coronavirus Contingency Plan
Hospitals across the Region of Murcia are beginning to regroup in the face of rising coronavirus infections, and the Rosell in Cartagena is no exception, where the management of health area II has reopened the 3-C ward on Wednesday May 4, specifically for Covid patients.
The newly opened ward will be able to cater for 16 patients in all and an additional 20 staff, made up of 10 nurses and 10 technical specialists, have been hired to cope with the influx.
As the manager of the Cartagena Health Area, José Sedes Romero, explained, “our commitment is to put as many resources and staff as necessary to respond to the demand for care and we find ourselves again at a difficult time with almost a thousand positive cases registered yesterday in the Murcian Health Service.”
The Cartagena University Hospital Complex currently has 103 Covid patients admitted, three of whom are being treated for more serious symptoms in the ICU of the Santa Lucia Hospital while another hundred people are distributed across the other wards.
Before the pandemic hit Spain, the Roselll was all but decommissioned when the Santa Lucia opened nearby, and it was prevented from being fully closed down thanks to the demand of the municipality, which at one point even involved a sit-in protest by staff. Now, with a seventh pandemic wave on the horizon, the Rosell’s facilities are proving to be a vital resource.
In the last 24 hours alone, the emergency departments at the Santa Lucia and Rosell hospitals registered visits from 437 adult patients, “of which more than 15% have needed admission, and despite the care pressure,” both units are managing to maintain their usual schedules.
The Cartagena Health Area has had a Contingency Plan in place since the beginning of the pandemic, which includes the possibility of adding extra Covid beds if necessary. As part of this plan, the health authorities have pointed out, “the Rosell Hospital allows us to offer the best health response when needs so require.”
