ARCHIVED - Cartagena to have new public park near city centre
The enormous plot in the coastal city of Cartagena is expected to be worth six million euros when completed
In approximately two weeks’ time, the new La Rambla park in Cartagena is going to be partially opened to the public, providing a ‘green lung’ for the city and an open space for residents.
The large 50,000-square-metre plot, located between the La Rambla shopping centre and the Cartagonova stadium, is currently being transformed into public gardens, parks, walkways and bike lanes. The end goal is for the developers to acquire 300,000m2 in total to continue expanding the park, but there are a series of houses, owned by an individual, and another plot of 40,000m2, which is also owned by private individuals, standing in the way at the moment.
According to Cartagena Town Hall, the park (dubbed Parque Inundable) is valued at approximately six million euros and will have a rainwater drainage system which includes a pond, allowing the park to reuse water in a sustainable way.
There is also going to be a small stage to be used for special events and occasions, and three different play areas for children. Four-legged residents of Cartagena have also been taken into account, and Parque Inundable will eventually include two canine areas.
In 2022, an initial budget of 50,000 euros has been allocated to continue completing the park, primarily the promenade, bike lane and outdoor sports area, along with a car park to encourage people to leave their vehicles near the park and walk into the city centre.
