Cartagena to welcome more than 35,000 cruise tourists in October
Multiple cruises are scheduled this month in the city
The port city of Cartagena is preparing for a boatload of visitors this October as it gears itself for the arrival of more than 35,000 cruise tourists. The peak tourist season continues to boom after a successful September in which 17 cruise ships docked. During October, there will be 29 ships docking with three small cruises.
Among the most renowned ships arriving at the port this month, the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, which will dock on October 27, can accommodate 5,602 passengers. Another large ship is the Norwegian Epic, which will arrive on October 20, with its 5,074 passengers.
Cartagena offers visitors a wealth of historical and cultural attractions and is always a favourite amongst tourists, while the tourists themselves represent an important boost for local commerce.
The first cruise ships of the month will arrive on Friday when Columbia’s Club Med 2, with 439 passengers, docks at the port. It will be followed by Costa Cruises’ Costa Favolosa on October 9, with 3,800 tourists on board.
Throughout the month, a variety of different cruise companies from several different countries will continue to arrive, including companies such as Crystal Cruises, Fred Olsen, Seabourn and Ritz Carlton.
On another note, during the month of October the ‘PorTuArte’ craft fair will continue at the Juan Sebastián DeElcano Cruise Terminal in Cartagena, selling 100% handmade products every time a cruise ship arrives in the city.
The craft fair seeks to bring together a wide range of artisans and the tourists that step from the ships. Every item is original, one of a kind and handmade by one of the creatives at the event.
The fair will be on the following dates:
- October 14, from 8am to 5pm
- October 20, from 10am to 8pm
- October 27, from 8am to 7pm
- November 6, from 8am to 5pm
- November 8, from 8am to 4pm
- November 27, 10am to 4pm

Cartagena tourism information
Where to find basic tourism information and information about historical sites and places to visit in Cartagena, Spain.
Cartagena has a wealth of historical sites, including the Roman Theatre Museum, Archaeological Museum, ARQUA Subaquatic Archaeology Museum, Panoramic lift, Civil War Air raid Shelter and Military and Naval Museums, as well as Tourist Bus and Tourist Boat which ferries visitors across to the Fuerte de Navidad.
There is one main Tourist Information Office and 2 tourist information points, the main one being in the Muralla Púnica Interpretation centre in Calle de san Diego and the other next to the Civil War Air Raid Shelter and Panoramic lift.
The office in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the easiest place to pick up a map if you've come into the port from a cruise ship, and has a few basic leaflets, but not a lot else.
The information point for the Puerto de Culturas attractions is by the Panoramic lift and Civil War Air Raid shelter in Calle Gisbert, although maps and leaflets are available at any of 3 information points.
There is plenty of in depth information about Cartagena in the dedicated Cartagena section, accessed via the map box at the bottom of every article page or by using the town search box at the top of the page. the introduction gives basic information about the city and then readers can select from the subjects below for information about the city, or the rest of the municipality.
