Christmas week weather in Spain: Forecast December 23-26
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day promise to be dry and sunny in large parts of Spain
The big day is almost upon us and most people will be turning their eyes to the sky and wondering what the weather has in store over Christmas week. And while the week will start off a little shaky, with wind, wave and frost warnings in many parts of the country, most of Spain can look forward to a dry and very mild few days.
As Christmas Eve and Christmas Day approach, we will see the mercury soar in many areas of Spain. The cold air will gradually move away from the north and east, leaving us with much higher temperatures than we’d expect to see this time of year.
Temperatures will reach 15ºCin some northern capitals and close to 20ºCin the Mediterranean and some southern capitals. Frosts will disappear from the usually colder capitals of Spain, while in the Canary Islands temperatures will fluctuate between 20 and 25ºC, as is usual at Christmas time.
Monday December 23
A humid air flow will leave plenty of rain and overcast skies in northern Spain on Monday and the Balearic Islands will also be hit with some stormy intervals, particularly in the east.
The Canary Islands will continue to be affected by a DANA, with hazy skies, lots of rain and persistent storms forecast.
The rest of Spain can expect a dry, bright start to the week as temperatures begin to climb into the high-teens.
However, strong winds with sometimes fierce gusts will cause some problems in large parts of the Atlantic coast.
Orange alerts for gusts/dangerous sea conditions: Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia, Galicia, Basque Country, Valencian Community.
Yellow alerts for gusts/dangerous sea conditions: Castilla-La Mancha, Region of Murcia, Navarra.
Tuesday December 24
Christmas Eve will be very pleasant, dry and sunny in most of Spain, with the exception of the extreme north. There’s a chance of some early morning rain in the Balearic Islands and in the Canary Islands, rain and haze is expected throughout the day.
Daytime temperatures will continue to rise and there will be few changes to the minimums.
Orange alerts for gusts/dangerous sea conditions: Balearic Islands, Catalonia.
Yellow alerts for gusts/dangerous sea conditions: Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencian Community.
Wednesday December 25
Lovely settled weather will greet much of Spain and the Balearic Islands on Christmas Day, with only some light rainfall forecast in the eastern Cantabrian Sea and the Pyrenees.
In the Canary Islands, there’s a slight chance of rain in the westernmost islands, and the presence of haze will most likely continue on all the islands.
Wednesday will be warmer than earlier in the week, with several parts of the south hitting a balmy 20ºC.
Yellow warning for rough seas: Balearic Islands
Thursday December 26
The weather will change a bit on Thursday, and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast largely cloudy skies in coastal areas of the Mediterranean and Alboran. In the Canary Islands, the low pressure seen in recent days will most likely evolve into a cold low pressure, and cloudiness and rain will continue.
Temperatures will not experience significant changes anywhere in Spain, and frosts, which are generally weak, will be restricted to mountainous areas of the Peninsula.
