ARCHIVED - Crashed fire-fighting helicopter recovered from Villajoyosa reservoir
The out-of-control helicopter plunged into Amadorio reservoir in the Marina Baixa four days ago
Firefighters and the Guardia Civil have managed to recover a private fire-fighting helicopter that plunged into the Amadorio reservoir in Villajoyosa during a practice flight on Thursday January 13.
The occupants of the aircraft, a pilot and co-pilot, were rescued by a team from Alicante Provincial Consortium of Firefighters and taken to Mutxamel heliport in another helicopter. Whilst neither of the occupants appeared to be injured, they underwent various tests and CT scans to rule out internal injuries.
The crash happened at around 2.30pm, when the helicopter, which belonged to a private fire-fighting company in Mutxamel, was carrying out manoeuvres in the Amadorio area.
On one of the approaches to the reservoir to take on water, the pilot reportedly lost control and the helicopter crashed.
The aircraft remained immersed in the reservoir until Saturday when access was cut off and a crane was used to pull the aircraft from the water.
Once extracted, the helicopter was transported by boat to Mutxamel Aerodrome, used by the company that owns it.
