ARCHIVED - Cruise ship tourism boom forecast for 2022 in Cartagena
30% more cruise ships to dock in the Region of Murcia this year compared to 2019
After a rocky 2020 and 2021 for the tourism sector and an array of travel restrictions, the new year is set to kick off with almost 50,000 cruise ship passengers visiting Cartagena in the first quarter.
The first arrival of 2022 is the Marella Explorer 2, docking on Wednesday January 5 with close to 2,000 passengers aboard, but this is just the first of many cruise liners, with ten ships and 19,452 passengers confirmed for January alone, including the Viking Venus, on Thursday January 6 (Three Kings Day).
In February, a further 15,000 visitors are going to arrive in Cartagena by ship, including the Azamara Journey, carrying mainly American and Canadian tourists, the Aidablu and the Bolette. Another seven cruise ships are expected to dock in Cartagena’s port in March, with over 10,000 more passengers, including 2,500 tourists travelling with the well-known company Tui. The largest ship by far is expected to arrive on March 24; the Regal Princess with her 3,560 passengers.
The cruise ship stops lined up for 2022 are 30% higher than those in 2019; 218 in total. Of the nearly 220 overnight stays scheduled, 36 will be double and 16 are going to be triple.
