ARCHIVED - DNA samples taken to try and identify body of kite surfer found off the coast of Javea
Police have still not been able to identify the woman whose body was found by a fisherman floating out at sea a few days ago
The Guardia Civil have taken DNA samples from the body of a woman which was found floating 16 miles off the coast of Xàbia, in the Marina Alta comarca of the Alicante province, just a few days ago (June 3) in order to try and identify her, although to do so there would need to be a registered missing person report and her genetic database would have to be on police databases.
Initial searches have failed to identify anyone registered as missing in Spain or whose DNA is on databases here in Spain.
The body was recovered on Thursday by the Guardia Civil and transported to the Port of Moraira and from there it was taken to the IML (Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science) in Alicante.
The initial autopsy of the body revealed that she had not suffered a violent death and it appears that the woman could have died accidentally while kitesurfing, as she was wearing a wetsuit and had a harness around her waist.
The cadaver was wearing a full wetsuit made by a brand which can only be bought in France and other sporting accessories from a company with shops in Italy, France, Spain and the Maghreb region (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia).
One of the possibilities being considered by the police is that the woman was a kite surfer from somewhere near Algeria or Morocco whose body was dragged by strong currents to the coast of Valencia.
According to the IML, the woman, who was of athletic build and 1.65 cm tall, was between 35 and 40 years old. The experts at the Institute also determined that the body had been in the water for between two and three months.
In an attempt to determine if the woman had been reported missing in Spain, all of her physical characteristics have been introduced into the police system to search for possible matches, although at the moment the search has not yielded results and police are now working with their international counterparts to try and search for missing persons reports in other countries.
