ARCHIVED - Drunk and high lorry driver arrested in Cartagena
The trucker was also driving on a suspended licence through Murcia
Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia have arrested a truck driver who was travelling on the A-30 highway between Albacete and Cartagena under the influence of both drugs and alcohol and without a valid licence.
The Cartagena Traffic Department were notified of the incident by several witnesses who reported that the lorry was driving erratically. One motorist decided to follow the truck from the Fuente Álamo highway RM-602 between Miranda and Los Muñoces when he noticed that it was swerving across lanes and even crashing into the safety barrier along the hard shoulder.
The concerned driver first believed the truck was swerving to avoid potholes, but when he realised this wasn’t the case, decided to follow the heavy goods vehicle at a safe distance and alert the authorities.
A motorcycle patrol eventually managed to intercept the vehicle at the access point to the Cabezo Beaza industrial estate and discovered that the truck driver, a 44-year-old Spanish man, showed clear signs of being under the influence. He submitted to a breathalyser test and was found to be over the alcohol limit for commercial drivers.
In addition, a saliva test gave a positive reading for cocaine and the trucker’s driving licence had previously been temporarily suspended by the Criminal Court of Granada.
The driver will be charged with two crimes against road safety: for driving under the influence of toxic drugs and for driving while having his licence suspended by a court ruling.
