ARCHIVED - Firefighters rescue distraught cat from the Segura riverbed in Orihuela
The animal was trapped in some branches which were growing out of the side of the riverbed’s wall, close to the water
Firefighters based in the Parque de Orihuela rescued a cat from inches above the Segura river at around 12.30 pm this Monday morning (April 26), after nearby residents heard its distraught meows.
The feline had somehow managed to become wedged in branches growing out of the wall within inches of the water in Calle Río, in the centre of Orihuela. It's not clear how the cat managed to end up in the vegetation, as this was a significant way down the high wall right next to the water.
After being alerted by residents in the area, firefighters arrived at the scene and scaled down the wall to reach the terrified animal.
After the cat was rescued safely, it was given to an animal protection organization, which will attempt to find out if the cat has an owner.
