ARCHIVED - Firefighters called to remove 90,000 bees from high school in Alicante
Around 90,000 bees in total were removed from the high school located on Calle Alonso Cano
Firefighters are expected to deal with an extraordinary range of situations and at this time of year are often called in to assist with particularly difficult removals of beehives, in this case at the Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria Gran Vía high school in Alicante, in order to remove a beehive, containing around 50,000 bees, from the school’s roof. In addition, the firefighters also removed four swarms containing roughly 10,000 bees each from nearby trees.
As well as the firefighters, a beekeeper was also present at the scene to ensure that the bees and the hive were moved correctly, without causing any harm to the insects or to the structure of the beehive.
In order to remove the swarms, special pheromones were used to lure the queen out, and the rest of the bees with her. The beekeeper then took charge of them and transferred them to a different location, and the firefighters cut down one of the tree branches, where the swarm had formed, to expedite the process.
By following the bees, the professionals were able to locate a hole, which was being used as an entrance point by the bees, in the upper part of the roof.
Firefighters had to pierce the partition to enter the interior of the roof, where the hive was located, in order to remove and rescue the bees.
The extraction took more than two hours to complete and was carried out safely and securely, without harming the bees, unfortunately an increasingly rare insect which is being virtually wiped-out by pesticides in some agricultural areas.
