Flu cases continue to climb in Andalucía as vaccination drive gathers pace
Health officials report a fresh rise in infections while thousands more residents take up jabs across the region
Flu levels in Andalucía have continued their upward trend, with new figures showing a clear increase in cases over the past week, just as health authorities intensify vaccination efforts across the region.According to the latest surveillance data, the incidence of influenza has risen by 4.6 points in just seven days, bringing the current rate to 38.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 33.5 the previous week. This follows an earlier surge that pushed Andalucía into epidemic levels for influenza-like illness, underlining that the virus is now actively circulating across the community.
Health officials say the rise is being closely monitored as part of ongoing prevention and control measures. The increase comes at a time when winter social activity remains high, a factor experts have already warned can accelerate the spread of respiratory viruses during the festive period.
In response, the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Health, Presidency and Emergencies has stepped up efforts to make vaccination as accessible as possible. Last Saturday, a special campaign was held at 42 locations in busy public spaces such as shopping centres, allowing people to be vaccinated without an appointment. “The aim is to remove barriers and make it easier for people to protect themselves,” health officials said.
In a single day, 11,181 doses were administered, including 7,588 flu vaccines, 3,448 combined flu and COVID-19 jabs, and 145 COVID-19 vaccines alone. Alongside these initiatives, walk-in vaccination sessions continue every Wednesday through the Andalusian Health Service.
Authorities say Andalucía is now well ahead of the national pace in the 2025–2026 flu vaccination campaign, having already surpassed last year’s total figures just over two months into the programme.
As of Friday December 12, a total of 1,768,919 people in Andalucía have been vaccinated against flu, with 738,703 also receiving COVID-19 protection. Seville currently records the highest number of flu vaccinations at 417,054, followed by Málaga with 313,195. Granada, Cádiz and Córdoba have also each vaccinated well over 190,000 residents against influenza, while uptake continues steadily across all provinces.
Health authorities continue to stress the importance of vaccination, particularly for older adults and vulnerable groups, as flu activity shows no sign of slowing. The message, they say, is simple: protection remains the most effective way to reduce serious illness as winter progresses.
