ARCHIVED - Microalgae farmed for commercial use in San Javier
A pioneering initiative in Torre Octavio in San Javier is farming microalgae for food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals
On Tuesday the mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo accompanied the regional Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, Antonio Luengo, on a visit to a microalgae production farm, located in Torre Octavio, San Javier.
These microalgae, grown in a series of 150-square-metre canals, are microscopic algae and their commercial use has long been a valuable untapped resource in Spain.
Commercially, they can be used in a variety of foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Once the algae in San Javier are grown, they are packaged and marketed in different ways according to the demand for the product, of which China is the largest producer.
The mayor acknowledged the innovation shown by entrepreneurs in the municipality by adapting to what the market demands and congratulated the operators of the microalgae farm for launching an initiative that is sustainable and creates zero emissions.
Since 2017, the business has been funded by Galpemur aid, whose objective is to support fishing or aquaculture initiatives that create employment or improve production processes.
