ARCHIVED - Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara in Cartagena still not restored by development company
Restoration work on the 16th century Cartagena monastery has been halted once again
Almost two months have passed since the local government in Cartagena ordered Hansa Urbana, the owners of the monastery, to resume their restoration work and still the 16th-century historical building lies in a state of disrepair. Far from being prepared to begin, it is reported that the construction company has instead lodged an appeal for a reversal of the decision.
Faced with fresh delays in the restoration of the monastery, MC Cartagena has presented an administrative appeal asking the council to take charge of the repair in order to prevent the total collapse of the monastery and its tower.
During the property and construction boom of the early years of this century, an agreement was signed between the Town Hall and Hansa Urbana by which permission was granted to build the large-scale Novo Cartago residential development in El Beal, and one of the conditions was a commitment on the
part of the developers to restore the monastery and return it to the Town Hall. However, Novo Carthago was never built, and since then the monastery has lain abandoned and its condition has deteriorated significantly.
Now, rather than being the centre of an attractive and bustling resort-style area containing 6,000 homes, the monastery still stands alone alongside the dual carriageway between La Manga and Cartagena.
The restoration work is made all the more urgent given that the festival of San Ginés, one of the patron saints of Cartagena, will be celebrated on August 22.
The latest appeal urges the regional government to take control of the situation by carrying out the repair works that Hansa is refusing to undertake before the monastery falls into an even worse state of disrepair. The brief states that "this situation represents the umpteenth delay in a compulsory action, delays that the current Government has caused due to its inaction.”
Despite the ongoing dispute over who is ultimately responsible for the site, the perimeter wall, which was damaged during storm Dana, has been repaired, and the orchard is currently being replanted.
