ARCHIVED - Mosquito plague hits residential areas near the salt lake in Torrevieja
Residents have submitted a formal complaint to the Town Hall and threatened to take further action if nothing is done
This year has been particularly humid in the Torrevieja area, due principally to the wetter than average spring, something which is not unique to the municipality and is causing headaches for councils all over Spain.
Over the first weekend in June, heavy storms lashed the Alicante and Murcian coasts, a highly unusual situation for June, and now temperatures are rising into the 30s.
The combination of which creates perfect conditions for breeding mosquitos: high temperatures and humidity.
Torrevieja is unfortunately feeling the effects and although its saltwater lakes are an attractive integral element of its countryside, they also create fertile breeding grounds for mozzies, the result being that the biggest mosquito plague in recent years has hit the areas surrounding the salt lake in Torrevieja and many residents feel that the local Town Hall isn’t doing enough to improve the situation.
Residents want the council to fumigate the entire area and put an end to the problem, and over 100 people have signed a written complaint, which has been submitted to the Town Hall, stating that the overwhelming number of mosquitos is affecting their day to day lives, as they can no longer sit on their patios, go for walks or even hang their washing out.
The most affected areas are Las Torretas I, II and III, Torreta Florida, Lago Jardín, Los Balcones, La Siesta and Aguas Nuevas, where local residents have complained about the constant mosquito bites, even comparing them to torture.
The local government has been receiving complaints since the end of March and social media has been flooded with images of the infestation, but the Town Hall’s response has been to state that it is not easy to control the mozzies in the area, as it is around 50 per cent humid wetland.
Some residents have even threatened to organize a protest at the entrance to the Town Hall in Torrevieja with the hope that the problem might finally be solved, or at least alleviated.
The council has been engaged in an intense sparaying campaign around the area for weeks and posts images of council operatives spraying almost every day of the week, but with the continuous cycle of storms followed by bursts of hot weather, and so many places in which mosquitos can breed, it's a relentless battle of man versus mozzie.
List of areas sprayed within the latest 24-hour period according to the town hall of Torrevieja, which has also showed images of the marsh areas which are causing the problems and which are being treated with larvicide to prevent the development of mosquitos:
