Murcia became Spain's most affordable region in July
Inflation in the Region of Murcia fell to 1.4%, the lowest in all of Spain
While we all know the price of everything from the weekly grocery shop to a tank of fuel is going nowhere but up, it seems consumers in the Region of Murcia are faring better than most. Inflation in Murcia came in at 1.4% in July, a modest but welcome 0.3% drop compared to the previous month and the lowest figure in all of Spain.
This is according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), which published the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data this week.
Looking a bit closer, prices in the Region of Murcia are still creeping up compared to last year, but the pace is gentler than everywhere else. Energy costs were the main contributor, pushing the year-on-year CPI to 2%, but even then, it is the slowest rise in the country and comfortably under the national average of 2.7%.
Groceries, drinks, meals out and everyday services saw small increases, while clothing, shoes and transport actually became slightly cheaper over the year.
Across Spain, the picture is more mixed. Nationally, monthly CPI dropped slightly in July, but overall prices are still climbing at 2.7% compared to last year. Economists are keeping a close eye on the trend, with forecasts suggesting inflation could approach 3% by the autumn.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, said he believes that this inflation trend "is compatible with the strong dynamism of the Spanish economy, which remains a driver of growth among the main European countries."
He added that "this price stability, the record job creation and wage increases are allowing families to progressively recover their purchasing power."
Overall, the Balearic Islands, Valencia and Extremadura saw the biggest year-on-year increases, while Murcia, the Canary Islands and La Rioja were the most stable.
Most parts of Spain saw modest rises compared to last month, with Murcia among the lowest at just 0.3%, showing that for now at least, price pressures are staying in check.
