ARCHIVED - Murcia breaks another Covid record with 6,612 cases in last 24 hours: update January 11
Six further deaths were reported in the Region of Murcia in the latest update
Despite hopeful predictions that the sixth wave could be coming to an end in Spain, the Region of Murcia has once again reported a record-breaking number of new cases: 6,612 new diagnoses on January 10.
Although no further restrictions are being imposed by the government, the Murcian authorities have requested to extend the current measures until February 4, and to further combat the Omicron variant, health staff are vaccinating as many people as possible.
Booster jabs are now being offered to over 45s in the Region and mass vaccinations days are being held this month in Alhama de Murcia and in the municipality of Mazarrón.
New cases
Of the startlingly high figure of 6,612 cases in 24 hours reported on January 11, almost a third (2,028 cases) were registered in the municipality of Murcia, where the capital city is located. Cartagena had 906 cases, Lorca had 424, Yecla had 309, followed by Molina de Segura with 246 cases and Cieza with 205. The remaining municipalities all reported 200 or fewer cases.
Active cases
The 30,000 active cases threshold has also been surpassed in the latest update, with 30,786 people now diagnosed with the virus, of whom 30,315 are in self-isolation at home. This is a rise of 10,000 cases since last week.
Hospitalisations
Hospital admissions continue to rise slowly in the Region with 471 people now is hospital with Covid. Patients in ICU with serious Covid symptoms are also on the rise, with 91 beds now taken up by Covid patients.
Fatalities
Monday’s update, January 11, detailed six further Covid-related deaths; five men and one woman aged 62, 68, 74, 76, 77 and 78. Five of the victims were from Health Area VI (Vega Media del Segura) and one was from Health Area II (Cartagena).
Incidence rates
The sixth wave has seen the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the Region of Murcia break record after record and the figure has now reached 3,647.2 cases per 100,000 people. And the 7-day rate is following a similar curve at 2,140.1, up from 1,953.3 just 24 hours ago.
