ARCHIVED - Murcia company develops 450-kilometre emission-free HGV Mediterranean Corridor
Disfrimur invest in the infrastructures needed for CO2-free distribution and transport in Murcia and the region of Valencia
It is becoming more and more widely accepted in Spain that the transition to environmentally sustainable vehicles needs to be made as soon as possible, and although the infrastructures needed in order to support the changeover a still largely missing progress is also being made in this field.
One of the latest examples is a plan which has been put together in the Region of Murcia and the Comunidad de Valenciana to create a 450-kilometre route for fully electric trucks and other HGVs, providing them with their own “Mediterranean corridor”. The project has been developed with the logistics and distribution company Disfrimur and Ingeteam, and the aim is to extend the network nationwide in the next few years.
There are three main aspects of the scheme: the purchase of fully electric HGVs up to 40 tons, the creation of a network of public recharging stations (including the installation of charging points at the logistical hubs operated by Disfrimur in Sangonera la Seca and San Isidro, which will also be made available to the public) and the creation of an intelligent electricity network to provide maximum efficiency at the charging stations.
Innovation is also present in the charging stations themselves, as they will use the new Megawatt Charging System: this makes it possible for large vehicles such as trucks and buses to be fully charged in under half an hour.
At present the planned route runs from Puerto Lumbreras in the south-west of Murcia to Benicarló in the north of the Comunidad Valenciana.
Last week Disfrimur unveiled its first refrigerated articulated lorry to use no diesel fuel, presenting it as a means of saving costs and energy while reducing atmospheric and noise pollution. The latest addition to the company’s 600-strong fleet runs on liquid natural gas and incorporates an electricity-powered refrigeration system in the trailer, and will avoid the emission of an estimated 20,000 kilos of CO2 into the atmosphere every year.
