ARCHIVED - N-332 cut off from May 3 for roadworks on the Urbanova/Alicante-Elche airport turn off for two months
A further 12 km will be added onto the route from the city of Alicante direction to the airport, Urbanova, El Altet and more due to the rehabilitation work
Rehabilitation work on the Aguamarga overpass, which will begin next Monday (May 3) and last for around two months, will cut off access to the airport, Arenales and Santa Pola from the city of Alicante, forcing commuters to take a 12-kilometre detour.
From Monday the Avenida de Elche will be cut off near the N-332 in order to carry out conservation and maintenance work on the Urbanova-airport turn-off.
Even though the road works will only cut off 400 m of the N-332, it will mean adding an extra 12 kilometres onto the travelling distance for most people.
The alternative route to reach the Alicante-Elche airport from the city of Alicante will now mean turning off the Avenida de Elche N-332 and travelling up the N-340 and N-338 until reaching another turn-off for the airport.
To get to Urbanova, the route will be the same, but instead of turning off at the airport, drivers will have to continue down the N-338 until it connects with Saladar road, which leads to Urbanova.
In the opposite direction, from Urbanova, El Altet and the airport to Alicante, traffic is expected to remain open as usual.
The journey will also be several kilometres longer for people living in the districts of El Altet or Arenales del Sol, many of whom work or take their children to school in Alicante.
It is expected that there will be more traffic than normal during rush hours in El Altet, especially at the roundabouts which give access to Aitana de Elche school and IFA.
However, despite the inconveniences, Alicante’s council has stated that the Aguamarga reformation project is necessary to improve the current conditions and durability of the overpass, including repairing the damaged concrete, which has been affected by oxidation due to its proximity to the sea.
