New Águilas study puts beach sustainability at the heart of the town's tourism plan
Águilas Town Council has drawn up a study analysing the dynamics of 13 of its beaches, with the aim of improving the management and sustainability of the coastline

Councillor for Tourism in Águilas, José Antonio Consentino, has announced that the local Town Council is currently drafting a study to improve the management and sustainability of the municipality’s beaches as part of the ‘Discover Águilas’ Tourism Sustainability Plan.
This Plan analyses the current state of 13 beaches in the municipality, as well as risk factors to ensure their long-term sustainability.
It is financed by European Next Generation funds, within the framework of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
Objectives and approach of the study
The study has focused on two fundamental aspects:
- Firstly, to compile all existing information on the current state of the coastline, such as historical data on tides, the relief of the seabed and previous studies on erosion
- Secondly, to develop a topographic-bathymetric database which enables them to understand how these factors interact and affect the shape and evolution of beaches, which will help to anticipate future changes
“Protection of the beaches, combined with a better understanding of how they behave, will enable Águilas to remain an attractive, safe and environmentally friendly destination,” said Councillor Consentino. “What’s more, this analysis will contribute to ensuring the long-term sustainability of these areas, benefiting both the local community and tourists.”
With initiatives such as this, Águilas is consolidating its position as a destination committed to tourism competitiveness and environmental protection, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the PRTR commitments.
