ARCHIVED - New ecopark set to open in Murcia at the start of 2023
Murcia city's second ecopark will be located on an industrial estate in Cabezo de Torres
A second ecopark looks set to become a reality within the next six months in Murcia city after the council approved a 3,600 m2 plot on an industrial estate in Cabezo de Torres.
Councillor for Sustainable Mobility and Street Cleaning, Carmen Fructuoso, explained that although the local authority will provide the land, on which preparation work has already begun, the eco-park facilities will be funded and operated by the street cleaning concessionary company, Prezero.
The new ecopark is expected to be operational at the beginning of next year and will be larger than the city's existing plant in San Ginés, the first in the municipality which last year received just over 1,000 tons of waste.
More than half of this (600 tons) is paint, bulky waste, cardboard, scrap metal, cables, rubble, wood, sofas and armchairs, plastics and pruning waste. The remainder is typically made up of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), non-LED and fluorescent discharge lamps and LEDs.
"The new ecopark is easy to access and will serve all the northern districts of the municipality. It will have a covered and enclosed area for hazardous waste, a container area, and storage for pruning waste, electrical and electronic equipment, bulky waste, scrap metal and rubble," explained the council.
At last Friday's plenary meeting, the city council also approved maintenance and improvement works at pavilions in five districts, with a budget of 940,000 euros; Sangoneras, El Esparragal, Cabezo de Torres, Urban de Espinardo, and Cabezo de Torres football pitch.
In addition, the green light was given to the recovery of green areas and repair and
maintenance work on roads at El Mirador de Agridulce urbanisation, a project requested by the developer at a cost of more than 120,000 euros.
