The Region of Murcia’s roads are set for some careful attention over the coming years, as the Ministry of Public Works has just awarded the contract for drafting a brand new Regional Highway Plan. With a budget of just over €222,000, this major project is part of the “Pact for Transport Infrastructure in the Region of Murcia” - a promise made by the regional government to bring the road network up to scratch for everyone who lives and travels here.

 

Regional Minister Jorge García Montoro put it simply: “This document will allow the Region of Murcia to have a comprehensive technical tool to diagnose the current state of the regional network, plan future actions, and establish a medium- and long-term investment strategy.” The new plan will analyse the current condition of approximately 2,730 kilometres of regional roads, making it the most in-depth review to date.

 

What does that mean in practice? The experts behind the plan will be looking at everything: how much traffic there is, the state of the road surfaces, which improvements need tackling first, and how these roads fit into a bigger picture of mobility and safety. There will even be a strategic environmental assessment and innovative proposals for digitalisation, climate change adaptation, and protecting the region’s road heritage.

 

Councilor García Montoro explained the main aim: “The regional government’s goal is to have a useful and rigorous tool that guarantees a road network adapted to the real needs of citizens, to facilitate territorial integration and cohesion, ensure accessibility to all points in the region, meet transportation needs, and improve road safety.”

 

The plan won’t just look at potholes and repairs, but will also consider how to connect towns and cities more efficiently, make journeys safer, and support a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way of getting around Murcia. Improvements will be prioritised using clear, objective criteria that consider not just road wear and tear, but also which projects have the biggest positive impact locally.

 

So, while it may sound like paperwork, this step is a big deal for the future of Murcia’s regional roads. The results should mean smoother, safer trips for everyone, no matter where in the region you call home.
