ARCHIVED - New-born fawn rescued from forest fire in Moratalla
The blaze raged throughout Sunday afternoon and threatened wildlife species and their habitat
Firefighters in the north-west of the Region of Murcia managed to bring a wildfire under control on Sunday, minimizing the effects of a blaze which began in the early hours of the afternoon, and at the same time rescued a newborn fawn whose mother had gone into labour and was unable to escape the flames as they consumed the undergrowth in the area of Casa Escámez, in the municipality of Moratalla.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the human population of this rural area, but the damage to wildlife species and their habitat was considerable and it was only due to the intervention of the alert firefighters that the baby Bambi came out unscathed, along with his mother.
As many as 80 firefighters took part in the operation to bring the fire under control and it was not until around 20.00 that they managed to do so as gusts of wind fanned the flames. After the smoke was spotted by staff at the Infomur lookout point in El Salto, teams were dispatched from the helicopter bases in Zarcilla de Ramos, Alcantarilla and La Alberquilla, along with ground-based firefighters from Caravaca, Moratalla, Calasparra, Mula, Cieza, Jumilla and Ricote.
This summer is expected to be a busy one for firefighters due to the wet spring generating larger than normal volumes of weeds and scrubby undergrowth, all of which is about to dry to tinder-box brittle.
