ARCHIVED - Norway National Day celebrations in Alfaz del Pi: May 17
Around 1,000 people are expected to take part in the festivities in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
The streets of Alfaz del Pi will once again be filled with colour, culture and music in celebration of Norway National Day on May 17 after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
The festivities to mark Norway's constitution signing in 1814 will return in all their splendour with around 1,000 people expected to take part in the festival of marching bands, parades, national flag flying and traditional costume.
Alfaz is home to up to 2,700 registered Norwegians, although the actual figure is estimated at around 8,000, and as is the case every year, Alfaz del Pi Town Hall is collaborating with a number of Norwegian institutions, including: the Norwegian School Costa Blanca; the Norwegian Club Costa Blanca; the Norwegian School of Albir; Norwegian Church of Albir; and others.
Every May 17 for more than five decades, the central streets of Alfaz have been awash with colour and culture to mark the occasion, and this year, the celebrations will kick off at 8am with the hoisting of the national flag at all Norwegian institutions in the town.
At 10.15am there will be an open-air mass in the Plaza Mayor before the traditional parade at 11am, which will make its way along the town centre streets from Hotel El Molí to the Casa de Cultura (Culture Centre), where the institutional ceremony will take place.
The party will continue at the municipal sports centre, with activities, music, dancing, games and entertainment for children and adults.
