ARCHIVED - Over 100 fines relating to covid infractions during the first weekend with no curfew in Alicante
Police had to dissolve numerous house and street parties across the city on Friday and Saturday night
During the first weekend following the removal of curfew restrictions in the Valencia region, the Policía Local in Alicante city alone gave out a total of 105 fines to people caught attending stag and hen parties, house parties and botellones (street parties) in different parts of the city, including the Casco Antiguo, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, the Ereta and Cabo de las Huertas.
Over 300 police officers were patrolling the city this weekend (June 11-13) in order to prevent and dissolve any parties in anticipation that it was highly likely that such events would occur after the end of curfew restrictions. The officers were also helped by an aerial drone which surveyed areas where gatherings were likely to take place.
One of the most notable police interventions was on Calle Castaños, where officers had to tell three stag and hen party groups to tone down the volume and to obey Covid restrictions.
In addition, the police had to dissolve 11 house parties which were generating a lot of noise complaints from other residents.
Three businesses were also fined, one for allowing customers to use the dance floor and two for not obeying the obligatory closing time in the province of Alicante.
Another 16 disciplinary acts were given for not wearing a face mask covering. A further four fines were also imposed for drug use, as well as two for smoking without social distancing and four fines given to people who refused to identify themselves or disobeyed police officers. Ten people were also caught driving while under the influence.
The Mayor, Luis Barcala, has stated that a slight rise in misbehaviour was expected during the first weekend with no curfew, which is why extra police officers were drafted in on Friday and Saturday evenings.
