ARCHIVED - Over 244,000 Murcians already have a Covid passport
Vaccination certificates are already required for entry into many venues throughout Spain
More than 244,000 people in the Region of Murcia have already obtained the so-called ‘Covid passport’ which details whether a person has been fully vaccinated or has developed antibodies having overcome the virus.
Some 178,930 people have obtained the physical passport in person in Murcia while a further 58,544 have received it digitally.
On Monday June 14, over two weeks before the deadline set by the European Union, the Region of Murcia officially inaugurated the passport system, which is aimed at allowing trouble-free travel throughout the EU for all of those who are fully vaccinated against Covid or who have overcome coronavirus in the last six months.
The passport system has already been imposed as mandatory in sectors such as hospitality and tourism in several Spanish autonomous communities. The latest to join has been Andalucía, which requires this certificate to access the interior of nightlife venues, although the regional government is now suggesting that this requirement will not be enforced until it is granted legal backing.
The regional government of Murcia so far has not made a firm decision on extending the use of vaccine passports, but is instead waiting for the national Ministry of Health to make a move. Sources from the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday, August 3 that “this measure must include a common legal framework throughout the country, and establish a model for all communities.”
At the end of July, Health Minister Carolina Darias indicated that there are no immediate plans to follow the lead set in France, where a controversial bill has been passed obliging all residents to produce Covid vaccination certificates to gain access to bars, restaurants and even some forms of public transport.
