ARCHIVED - Passengers on Alicante TRAM increase by 35 per cent with free Sunday services
Metro and tram services in Alicante and the rest of the Valencian Community will be free on Sundays until the end of July
The first Sunday where free metro and tram travel has been offered in the Valencian Community has been a roaring success, with passenger numbers up between 29% and 41% across the three provinces compared to just a week ago.
The regional president, Ximo Puig, announced last month that the TRAM d’Alacant would be completely free every Sunday until July 31 and that other fares would be slashed by up to 50% in an attempt to alleviate the strain rising inflation has had on citizens.
Between the Alicante TRAM, Castellon’s Castelló and the Metrovalencia, passenger numbers have increased by around 30% and on May 1, 25,280 people took advantage of the free service on the Costa Blanca tram, which represents a huge increase of 35% on this one day alone.

Given that Alicante enjoyed sunny skies and soaring temperatures on the May bank holiday weekend, it’s unsurprising that the most popular routes were between the city and the popular resort of Benidorm, as well as to other coastal areas.
In addition to easing the effects of rising prices on families living in Valencia, the president hopes that the free service will encourage more people to switch to public transport in the future. One of the goals of the scheme, Mr Puig said, is to “facilitate more sustainable mobility, at a time when energy efficiency prevails, without forgetting the need to mitigate the very negative effects of pollution and climate change.”
