Pulpí steps up mosquito control ahead of the summer season

Mosquito numbers are expected to surge across Almería in the coming weeks

As temperatures rise across southern Spain, mosquito season is getting underway and local authorities are already stepping up efforts to keep numbers under control.

In Pulpí, a coastal municipality in the province of Almería near the border with Murcia, the town hall has announced an intensification of fumigation work across the area. The aim is to reduce mosquito populations before they peak in the hottest months.

Officials say spraying efforts are being increased throughout the municipality, targeting areas where mosquitoes are most likely to breed. But they are also stressing that public cooperation is essential if the measures are to be effective.

Residents are being urged to carry out simple weekly checks of patios, terraces and gardens to eliminate standing water, which is the main breeding ground for mosquitoes. Even small amounts can be enough for larvae to develop.

Common problem spots include plant pots, buckets, clogged gutters, drains, tarpaulins and poorly maintained swimming pools. Authorities warn that these can quickly become unnoticed breeding sites, particularly during warm weather.

“Prevention is everyone’s responsibility,” the council said in a statement, encouraging locals to take an active role in protecting their homes and neighbourhoods.

Anyone who spots a potential outbreak or area of concern is asked to contact the town hall directly so it can be assessed and treated.

Mosquitoes are a familiar part of summer life across Andalucía, especially in coastal and low-lying areas where heat and humidity create ideal conditions for them to thrive. While they are often little more than a nuisance, their numbers can increase rapidly if breeding sites are not controlled.

There are also growing concerns in some parts of Spain about species such as the tiger mosquito, which can spread in urban areas and is known for its aggressive daytime biting.
