ARCHIVED - Record number of infections over a weekend: Valencia Covid update January 17
Almost 200 critically ill patients are admitted to ICU in hospitals in Alicante province and the rest of the region
The Omicron variant continues to spread at an unprecedented rate as the Valencia region once again breaks through a pandemic record.
In its latest update, the regional Ministry of Health has confirmed a staggering 34,774 new infections over the weekend, more than 5,000 higher than last week and the highest number recorded on a Monday since the beginning of the pandemic.
And the pressure is being felt in hospitals, with almost 1,700 admissions, including 198 seriously ill patients in ICU.
The upwards trend, which has not let up so far this year, has seen the region's 14-day cumulative incidence rate reach 2,841.64 cases per 100,000 people.
Coronavirus cases
The Regional Ministry of Health has reported 34,774 new Covid cases since Friday January 14, significantly higher than the 29,347 cases reported last Monday, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 851,441.
By province: 5,597 have been recorded in Castellón (103,283 in total); 12,984 in Alicante (309,154); and 16,193 in Valencia (439,002).
There are still two unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 161,890 active cases, which represent 18.76% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,699 people admitted to hospital with Covid (up from 1,464 on Friday), 198 of them in ICU (nine more): 241 in the province of Castellón, 26 in ICU; 577 in the province of Alicante, 71 of them in ICU; and 881 in the province of Valencia, 101 in ICU.
18,458 patients have overcome the virus since the last update, meaning 692,704 people have recovered from the disease since the start of the pandemic.
By provinces, the discharges are distributed as follows: 77,602 in Castellón; 246,914 in Alicante; and 368,132 in Valencia. The total of unassigned registrations remains at 56.
Fatalities
A further eight Covid-related deaths have been reported over the weekend, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,288: 936 in the province of Castellón, 3,181 in Alicante and 4,171 in Valencia.
The deceased are seven men, aged between 55 and 91, and an 84-year-old woman.
Vaccination data
There has been no update on vaccinations, but as of last Friday, 4,265,413 people had been double-jabbed or had received the Janssen single dose, and a total of 10,042,110 doses of vaccine had been administered since the beginning of the pandemic.
