ARCHIVED - Residents up in arms over beach bar in Pilar de Horadada
Locals are furious over the location of Jesuitas beach bar in Torre de la Horadada in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca of Alicante province.
More than 4,000 residents in Pilar de Horadada municipality have signed a petition calling for an alternative site to be found for the beach bar, or chiringuito as they are known in Spain.
The chiringuito has been a familiar sight every summer for the last 60 years, but this year it has been placed 10 metres from homes along the coastline, with residents livid over the move.
"The most beautiful view in our municipality has disappeared forever, being replaced by a hut," said petition organisers, who have blasted the move as "aesthetic barbarity".
"Do you know the impact of opening the door of your house and that the first thing you see, a few meters away, is a mass of concrete and wood?", they complained.
The change.org petition calling for Pilar de Horadada Council to find an alternative location has received 4,200 signatures - a significant amount considering Torre de la Horadada in the Pilar de Horadada municipality, has a population of 3,700.
The protestors also want to see environmental studies carried out claiming the beach bar has been placed on a slope weakened by various storms, and "an area of great environmental value with many protected plants".
"The implementation of this beach bar will promote erosion and the disappearance of the environment we all enjoy and respect," they said, adding: "It is a disservice to all visitors and residents of Torre de la Horadada, who have always advocated taking care of our valuable Jesuits beach and keeping it in the best condition while respecting the precious natural environment we have."
Pilar de Horadada is 20km from Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca and is home to 2,850 British expats.
