Ryanair delays axing paper boarding passes until November

According to the Irish airline, nearly 80% of its 200 million passengers already use digital boarding passes

Amid widespread backlash from travellers, Ryanair has decided to delay introducing its digital boarding pass only scheme until November 3, which will coincide with the start of the budget airline’s winter campaign.

Originally, the Irish carrier had planned to axe paper boarding cards before summer 2025 after it was revealed that almost 80% of Ryanair’s 200 million passengers already choose the convenience of online check-in and boarding over physical tickets.

And while some customers are nervous about the transition to fully digital air travel, Ryanair is adamant that removing the need to print boarding passes should make travel faster and more efficient, as well as being kinder to the environment and cheaper overall.

“Ryanair is Europe’s No.1 airline for choice, low fares and customer service,” Ryanair CMO, Dara Brady said. “This move to 100% paperless boarding passes from November 2025 will allow us to deliver an enhanced travel experience for customers, streamlined through the myRyanair app during our less busy winter schedule”.

“This will be particularly useful to passengers during disruptions as it will facilitate real-time updates from our Ops Centre directly to passengers’ phones, and will also provide them with alternative flight options, and offer transfers or hotel accommodation options when necessary,” he added.

Once the airline goes fully digital, passengers will no longer have to pay check-in fees at the airport and the move will drastically reduce our carbon footprint, too. Ryanair estimates that they'll save more than 300 tonnes of paper waste each year.

With the November 2025 deadline looming, Ryanair is actively encouraging passengers to get on board with paperless flying and by winter, the airline hopes to be completely digital, which will be a major milestone in their mission to go green.
