Safety first: Lorca makes sure buildings are tip-top ahead of the Feria Grande
Once the celebrations are over, Lorca will begin constructing new homes in the historic Old Town

In the lead-up to the Feria Grande de Lorca 2025, city officials are making sure the Old Town is safe for the thousands of visitors expected to attend. Cornices, balconies and roofs on unoccupied buildings, along with scaffolding on demolished facades, are undergoing careful inspections.
Technicians from the Department of Urban Planning are working alongside the municipal Emergency Service, the fire department and Local Police to prevent any accidents from falling debris, tiles or glass during the day’s celebrations.
External inspections are being carried out using aerial platforms and boom trucks, ensuring that all structures are secure, explained José Martínez, the Councillor for Emergencies.
María Hernández, Councillor for Urban Planning, highlighted that while these inspections take place regularly throughout the year, extra attention is given ahead of major events like the Feria Grande and Holy Week. The checks cover streets including calles Selgas, Santa Victoria, Álamo, Pío XII and Corredera, as well as plazas such as Plaza de España, Arcoiris and Calderón.
This year, her department has issued 105 enforcement orders to property owners over the poor condition of abandoned homes and plots.
Meanwhile, 20 vacant lots between La Alberca Bridge and Calle Nogalte will face mandatory reconstruction or potential expropriation. Owners were summoned last week and reminded of their legal obligation to put their properties to social use. Failure to comply will result in the Department of Urban Planning initiating foreclosure proceedings.
The Feria Grande itself runs from September 19 to 28, offering a wide range of entertainment for all ages. Visitors can enjoy food, live music with free concerts, a children’s play area and the Feramur arts and crafts fair, one of the Region’s largest, opening on September 25.
The main evening funfair will take place at the Recinto Ferial in Parque Huerto de la Rueda, a riverside triangular area on the edge of the city, where many other events are also held.
