Second powerful DANA set to sweep Spain: Weather forecast Nov 11-14
A storm with “high impact potential” will hit southern Spain by the middle of the week
Weather alerts for storms on Tuesday
In the last few hours, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has delivered the worrying news that another cold air mass from northern Europe is due to reach mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands in the next couple of days.
It’s likely that this cold front “will end up being isolated as a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) or a cold storm in the Mediterranean area or the south of the peninsula from Wednesday 13th”, according to the experts.
This anomaly will bring another cold snap and “heavy rainfall” which will impact much of southern Spain until the end of the weekend.
“The most likely scenario at the moment is that rainfall in the Mediterranean area will begin on Tuesday, most likely in the south of the Balearic archipelago, especially in the Pitiusas, without ruling out other points on the Mediterranean coast,” an Aemet spokesperson said.
The rain will likely “be more intense and persistent in parts of the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean, especially north of Cape La Nao at first and, later, in the north of the Valencian Community and the coasts and pre-coasts of Catalonia,” he added.
Monday November 11
While most of the country will be fairly stable on Monday, northern Spain can expect scattered and occasionally heavy rain from the early morning. As the hours go by, this will spread to the west of the Balearic Islands and the rain will hit the southeast and the Andalucían Mediterranean coast by evening.
Daytime temperatures will fall in most places, hovering around the low-20s.
A yellow alert for rough sea conditions and heavy rain has been issued in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
Tuesday November 12
The cold front will sweep in on Tuesday, accompanied by the approach of a DANA to the northeast of the country, which will leave unsettled weather in much of the north and east of Spain, along with the Balearics.
Heavy rain is forecast in these areas, with downpours very likely in coastal areas of Catalonia, the southern coasts of Valencia, northern Alicante and the west of the Balearic Islands. However, thundery showers are possible in most of the Mediterranean.
Temperatures will generally drop, with light frosts in the main mountain systems.
The weather warnings in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia have been upgraded to orange, while yellow alerts are in place in Aragon and the Valencian Community.
Wednesday November 13
While the forecast is still very uncertain, Aemet is forecasting more heavy and persistent rain in Mediterranean areas, but stormy intervals are possible in practically the entire country, with the exception of the extreme west.
Temperatures will generally drop, notably in the southeastern third of the country.
Yellow alerts for storms are active in Andalucía, the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
Thursday November 14
Widespread rain is again expected on Thursday, with the worst of the downpours predicted to hit the Balearic Islands and the northeast of Spain, along with the northern half of the Mediterranean.
Although there is no clear trend yet, it’s likely that temperatures will rise in the northeast, the rest of eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands, and that temperatures will fall in the southwest of the country and the Canary Islands.
