Spain weather forecast August 17-20: Scorching temperatures followed by storms, hail and heavy rain
Much of Spain will see temperatures above 35°C this week, with some areas reaching 40°C before storms bring a dramatic change

Weather alerts for extremely high temperatures on Tuesday August 18
Spain is in for another mixed week of August weather, with intense heat returning to large parts of the country just as another spell of unsettled conditions starts to develop.
After a weekend of thunderstorms, hail and strong winds in parts of the interior, north and east, temperatures are now climbing again. Much of southern Spain could see temperatures above 35°C, with some areas reaching 40°C, before a fresh change brings cooler weather and more widespread storms later in the week.
Monday August 17

The week gets off to a very hot start, particularly across the southern half of Spain, the northeast, Madrid and parts of Valencia and Castilla y León.
Temperatures will climb inland while coastal areas and the Balearic Islands remain broadly similar. The Guadalquivir and Tagus valleys could reach around 40°C, while large parts of the south and east will pass 35°C.
AEMET has issued warnings for high temperatures in several areas, including parts of Andalucía, Almería, Jaén, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, Aragón and Catalonia.
There are also warnings for rain and thunderstorms in parts of Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Castellón and the Pyrenees.
Night-time temperatures will also be on the rise, with tropical nights continuing across much of the southwest, Mediterranean coast and parts of the northeast and Cantabrian coast.
Tuesday August 18

The heat will strengthen further across much of Spain, with temperatures rising in the north, Málaga, the southeast and the Canary Islands.
Around 40°C will again be possible in the Guadalquivir and Tagus valleys, while many other parts of the country will see temperatures above 35°C.
The Balearic Islands and southwest should remain similarly hot, although temperatures could ease slightly in some areas.
Isolated thunderstorms are expected across many inland mountain areas and the Pyrenees, although most other parts of the country should stay dry despite some cloud.
Wednesday August 19

Temperatures are expected to start falling across much of Spain on Wednesday, although the heat will continue to build in the Levante, Catalonia, Aragón and the Balearic Islands.
The weather will become increasingly unsettled as a low pressure system approaches from the west. Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the Pyrenees, Baetic mountains, northern Iberian System and Cantabrian Mountains.
Some storms could spread into lower-lying areas and parts of the southeast, with AEMET warning that the strongest could bring very strong winds and hail.
The Mediterranean coast will also continue to experience tropical nights, with temperatures staying above 20°C overnight in many areas.
Thursday August 20

A more widespread change arrives on Thursday as the unsettled weather spreads across much of Spain.
Northern areas are likely to see plenty of cloud and periods of rain, some of which could be heavy. Thunderstorms and hail are possible in the east and the Balearic Islands, while isolated showers could develop elsewhere.
Temperatures will fall across almost the entire country, in some places quite significantly.
The Mediterranean coast will remain the main exception to the cooler conditions, with daytime temperatures still above 35°C in some locations and overnight temperatures staying above 20°C.
