Spring has arrived in the Region of Murcia… along with the pests

Control de Plagas Levante is helping homeowners across Cartagena, Murcia and the Mar Menor prepare their properties for the warmer months ahead

As temperatures begin to climb across the Costa Cálida, many homeowners are enjoying their terraces, preparing their gardens and getting holiday properties ready for another long Spanish summer. But while spring brings sunshine, outdoor dining and longer evenings, it also marks the return of some very unwelcome seasonal visitors.

Across Cartagena, Murcia and the Mar Menor, warmer weather creates the ideal conditions for mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, wasps and rodents to become far more active. Coastal properties can be particularly vulnerable thanks to humidity, drains, gardens and periods where homes may sit empty during the quieter winter months.

For many homeowners, the first sign of a problem comes when they suddenly spot cockroaches in the kitchen, ants appearing in long trails across terraces or mosquitoes buzzing around their heads at night. By that point, what started as a small issue may already have developed into a much larger infestation.

Mosquitoes are one of the most common complaints during spring and summer in Murcia, particularly around the Mar Menor where standing water and warmer temperatures create ideal breeding conditions. Even something as simple as water left in plant pots, blocked gutters or poorly maintained drains can quickly attract them.

Cockroaches are another frequent issue in coastal areas and are especially common in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and empty holiday homes. As temperatures rise, they become increasingly active and difficult to control without professional treatment.

Ants also begin appearing more regularly during spring, often entering homes in search of food and water, while wasps start building nests early in the season before becoming far more aggressive during the height of summer.

Rodents remain a year-round concern in many urbanisations and residential areas, particularly in storage spaces, community areas and properties left unattended for long periods.

Preparing a home properly before summer arrives can make a major difference. Checking fly screens, sealing small gaps around doors and windows, clearing standing water and inspecting outdoor areas are all simple but effective steps homeowners can take.

Many residents also make the sensible choice to arrange preventative pest control treatments during spring, before problems escalate during the busier summer months.

That is where local specialists Control de Plagas Levante come in. Working with homeowners throughout Cartagena, Murcia and the Mar Menor, the company provides professional pest control services designed specifically for the challenges faced by coastal properties in south eastern Spain.

Their services include treatments for cockroaches, ants, rodents, mosquitoes, wasps and bed bugs, along with preventative solutions that help homeowners avoid larger infestations later in the year.

With many expats and second-home owners returning to Spain for spring and summer, early intervention is often the key to avoiding stress, damage and expensive problems further down the line.

With outdoor living season now beginning across the Costa Cálida, experts say there is no better time to prepare your property. Whether you live in Murcia full-time or own a holiday home near the Mar Menor, tackling pest problems early can help ensure a far more comfortable and enjoyable summer ahead.
