Strong earthquake measuring 3.4 registered in Malaga
The quake was felt in the Costa del Sol town of Ardales on Sunday
Andalucía has been rocked by yet another earthquake, the latest tremor striking on Sunday November 10 in the Malaga town of Ardales. The quake was pretty strong, measuring magnitude 3.4 on the Richter scale, meaning that plenty of residents felt its impact.
According to the National Geographic Institute, the latest quake struck at 10.34am, at a depth of 19 kilometres and with a latitude of 36.9 degrees north and a longitude of 4.85 degrees west.
Despite its fairly hefty strength, the 112 Andalucía Emergency Coordination Centre has confirmed that it didn’t receive any calls from concerned locals regarding the tremor, which occurred in a town located some 50 kilometres from the capital of Malaga, although the IGN indicates on its website that the earthquake was strong enough to be "felt".
Elsewhere on Sunday November 10, four other small earthquakes were registered in the Alboran Sea. They were reported by the IGN at 10.45am, 11.25am, 11.39am and 1.01pm. The first three were in northern Alboran, and the last one further south, near Melilla. The largest had a magnitude of 2.4 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake in Ardales is not the only one recorded in a municipality in the province of Malaga this weekend. Another one took place on Saturday November 9 in Alfarnate. In that case, the quake occurred at 9.58am and was even smaller (1.6 magnitude), at just 6 kilometres deep.
Earthquakes are a fairly common occurrence in Andalucía but they usually don’t reach a magnitude high enough to cause any concern, and few injuries or significant material damage are ever reported.
Last week, a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale struck the Gulf of Cádiz on Wednesday afternoon, November 6, which was strong enough to cause quite a stir in the area.
