The world's best cheese comes from Murcia this year
The World Cheese Awards have selected a product from Lorca as one of the best from more than 4,700 submitted this year
A blue cheese made by the El Roano cheese factory in Murcia’s Lorca has received the award for one of the best cheeses in the world by an international panel of experts. The cheese, which is made from raw goat’s milk, has always been a popular one amongst people in France and the United Kingdom, but has now taken on global opponents at the World Cheese Awards 2024, which were held in Portugal.
El Roano blue cheese has “character but is not too strong”, as explained by the makers of this award-winning cheese, which can be bought at stores such as El Corte Inglés.
At the World Cheese Awards 2024, El Roano won a super gold medal. The cheese has been described by the ambassador of the Region of Murcia, as an “excellent cheese” made from the milk of goats from its own farm. The goats are of the native Murcian-Granadian breed and they are known for producing a fine product.
The cheese ranges from 8 euros for 250 grams to 60 euros for 2 kilos, thus making it a more expensive product and more money than a standard cheddar in the supermarket. However, the cheese is made in a completely artisanal way, with milk from its own farm, and has now been recognised as one of the world’s best, making it well worth the price tag.
The Quesería El Roano cheese factory has been dedicated “body and soul to livestock farming” for more than three generations. The small family business however “only began in 2015 in the honourable profession of making its own cheese, quickly reaping important recognition worldwide.”
The quick results that the business has exhibited, shows the level of skill and knowledge that the small bussiness possesses when it comes to dairy products.
Lorca has been at the forefront of producing excellent cheese in the past few years. They have produced some of the best products with cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, goat’s milk and even buffalo milk. The world has taken notice and is now beginning to award the people of Murcia for the excellent produce that it creates.
Since its creation in 1988, the World Cheese Awards has become an international competition to recognise the best producers, merchants and chefs around the world.
The event helps bring together experts from around the world to evaluate and celebrate the best creations of the artisanal product that is cheese. The competition this year, which was hosted in Viseu (Portugal), received 4,786 different cheeses, which were evaluated by a jury made up of 250 experts in the sector.
As is well known, in Spain they care an awful lot about food. They take great pride in their gastronomy and Murcia is no exception. The flag of Murcia is being taken around the world connected to food products and the region is becoming increasingly well respected and known on the national and international scene.
The love of food that Murcia has will be exhibited next year when the capital hosts the 2025 Michelin Guide gala, where the most important representatives of national and international cuisine will meet to raise their talent to a firmament full of culinary stars.
