ARCHIVED - Thief who snatched dogs from gardens is arrested in Elche
The dog nabber waited until homeowners had gone out to pounce in the Baix Vinalopo town, Alicante province
An alleged dog thief who targeted pets roaming around gardens at rural properties in Elche whilst the owners were out has been arrested and charged with theft with force.
The dog nabber was detained on December 2 after a member of the public spotted an unknown man walking with two dogs belonging to a friend of his, and contacted Elche Local Police.
The local police and the Guardia Civil had received a number of reports of missing dogs in the Atzavares area, and responded immediately.
The suspect was still in the area and tried to convince officers the canines belonged to him, but a quick call to the station confirmed the actual owner was in the process of reporting the theft of two dogs.
Another pet owner had also filed a report with police claiming his dog had been stolen from inside his "completely fenced-in property" in the same area.
According to Elche police, the suspect was taken to Santa Pola police station where he admitted that he had taken the first complainant's two dogs.
After verifying the identity of the animals through their microchips, the legitimate owner was able to take the animals home. It's not clear whether the second pet owner has been reunited with his dog.
