Three devices you should always unplug during storms in Spain

Iberdrola, the Spanish energy company, provides tips for protecting your home during a storm

With one storm after another hitting Spain at the moment, Iberdrola is advising people to unplug certain electronics to protect them from power surges. Even devices that are switched off can be damaged if they’re still plugged in, and a nearby lightning strike can send a spike straight through your wiring.

 As soon as a storm starts rolling in, we usually close the windows, wind in the awnings, and secure any outdoor furniture. But apparently, that’s not all we need to do. Iberdrola points out that the electronics we leave plugged in can be just as vulnerable as anything outside.

Some of the most at-risk items are probably closer than you think. First up is the TV. Even if it’s switched off, a spike from a nearby lightning strike can fry the circuits, especially if you have a personal antenna without extra surge protection. The safest thing to do is just unplug it until the storm passes, even if the ideal way to spend a storm is snuggled up watching a movie. You can always switch to another device, like a laptop or tablet running on battery, so you can still enjoy your movie safely.

Next are the big appliances like fridges, washing machines, and dishwashers. They have motors and electronic boards that can be seriously damaged by sudden surges. You might worry about unplugging the fridge, but for storms lasting a few hours, the food will generally be fine. Washing machines and dishwashers can easily wait until the weather clears. A quick unplug can save you expensive repairs and a lot of stress.

Finally, computers and laptops. Even with surge protectors, strong spikes can overwhelm them, putting delicate electronics and important files at risk. Unplugging is the simplest way to stay safe. The same goes for phones and tablets, it’s fine to charge them beforehand, but during a storm it’s safest to disconnect them from the mains.

There are a few other simple steps to stay safe during a storm. Iberdrola also reminds people to avoid touching taps, showers, or any metal pipes, since plumbing can conduct electricity from a nearby strike. It’s best to stay away from open windows and balconies while lightning is active. For extra peace of mind, a small UPS (uninterruptible power supply) can help protect sensitive electronics.
